Rui Basílio, professionally known as Basílio, was born in Évora, Portugal, and found his true artistic expression in Porto de Mós. Rejecting conventional labels, he embraces a wide range of materials and techniques to create genuinely unique works.
From an early age, Basílio showed a strong interest in the arts. This passion deepened during his studies at the Instituto Educativo do Juncal, where he excelled in artistic subjects. After completing secondary education, he pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Design at the Escola Superior de Artes e Design das Caldas da Rainha, later beginning a Master’s degree in Product Design.
Although he worked in the mould‑making industry, Basílio never abandoned his artistic vocation.
Even after long working days, he continued to channel his creativity through drawings and personal projects.
His creative approach is defined by uncertainty. Each new project begins without a fixed outcome, and it is precisely within this discomfort that innovative ideas emerge. His body of work includes paintings, murals and significant interior design projects, such as Divine Hands, a painting on the tower of the Porto de Mós Volunteer Firefighters, and Cantoneiros, a Portuguese pavement art project.
Basílio’s ambition is to become one of Portugal’s most recognised artists, driving innovation and inspiring others. His artistic journey stands as a testament to passion, exploration and an ongoing commitment to creative and personal growth.
Through social media, I came across an open call inviting artists to submit their portfolios for a national competition. I was selected to represent the district capital of Leiria, competing alongside artists chosen from the remaining district capitals of Portugal.
The 16 selected artists were each provided with 50 spray cans and given two days to create a piece on a container promoting the new BMW 1 Series model.
In order to highlight the quality of human craftsmanship, I requested permission to intervene directly on the container using an angle grinder.
Approval was granted, and the final piece was awarded first prize. Winning this national distinction opened the door to new professional opportunities and marked a turning point in my life. This moment signalled the beginning of my full‑time artistic career.
